Rotary Club of Burnaby Celebrates Festival of Lights!

Brentwood Town Centre played host to an impressive Christmas tree display this past holiday season. Organized by The Rotary Club of Burnaby Deer Lake, this event, dubbed the Festival of Lights, comprised of 25 decorated trees displayed on the second level of the mall until December 29th. The public were invited to vote for their favourite decorated Christmas tree to help in their efforts to provide local needy children with winter boots. Each tree was sponsored by a local company or Rotary club, with sponsors decorating themselves, or recruiting local schools to do so.

The Club hoped to raise $10,000 for its programs, including its Boots For Kids campaign that provides warm winter boots for children in need at local inner city schools.

We were honoured to be a part of this fun and meaningful event. Our marketing team, spearheaded by SVP Manuela Mirecki, designed a Sugar Plum Fairy tree decked with pink tulle, hand-made oversized bon bons, fairy wings, silver doves and a sparkling tiara on top!

We had so much fun participating in this event.  And we were excited to learn that our tree had received the most votes!

Artist Profile – Mike Maca

To many, a house doesn’t feel like a home until the art is hung on the walls. We at Ledingham McAllister feel the same way! We believe that building and selling homes is much more than just an assembly of lumber and paint. Whenever possible we try to incorporate Art into our communities. We painstakingly search for a unique art piece or artist who will complete our vision for that particular community. We were made aware of an artist named Mike Maca when we were looking for the perfect piece of art to put in the lobby of our Perspectives building in North Burnaby. We were so pleased with that piece that we couldn’t wait to work with him again. When it came time to design the front gate at our Century community on Fraser Street, we knew that Mike would be a perfect fit. We were so excited that such an important work of art was being designed by a local East Vancouver artist to be admired for years to come. We have had an overwhelming response to both pieces and have had many questions about the artist, so after some gentle begging (Mike is very shy); he agreed to give us an interview.
We walk into Mike Macca’s studio on East 6th and find him hunched over a piece of metal with a blow torch in his hand. He is working so contentedly that he almost doesn’t notice us watching him in awe. He takes off his mask and tells us he’s just putting the finishing touches on this piece of art that is actually a garage door. As we make our way upstairs to the studio I can’t help but notice the hundreds of metal pieces hanging from the ceiling and walls of the workshop. I have so many questions for this talented artist who through old world craftsmanship has an innate ability to inject practicality and functionality into every piece.

Take one look at Mike Macca, or his work and you’d never guess that he was kicked out of art school, or spent a year and a half in jail for being a political dissident during Russia’s occupation of his homeland. Born in Czechoslovakia to a blacksmith father, Mike was introduced to working with metal at an early age. So it would make sense that it would be his first and favourite medium. Having no formal art training, Mike says he learned from others, in seeing things that interested him and trying to do it in a different or better way. In search of a better life for his family, he decided to move them to Canada in 1986. After six months in Austria, waiting for his paperwork to go through, he arrived in Canada with his wife and two year old daughter Jana. Fast forward 26 years and Mike Maca is a very successful Vancouver artist, producing quality wares for individuals, designers and architects alike.

We are now upstairs in his studio and we are blown away by his collection which includes sculptures and various works with metal and paint. As we walk around chatting, he points out his favourite piece, a set of clay sculptures that are a work in progress. When asked how he knows that a piece is finished, he shyly says “when it feels right”.

Another piece that I notice with interest is hanging from the ceiling above me. He tells me it is his family portrait!

We finish our tour back in the workshop and Mike shows us some of the pieces he is currently working on.

Mike Macca is a man of few words, full of passion that is abundantly evident in his work.  We are so thrilled with the pieces that he has created for us and we are already brainstorming ideas for our next community. We can’t wait to see what he comes up with next!

happy

… and in other cool Neighbourhood News…

… Bee Kim Heng Jerky, located at 4194 Fraser Street! (Just steps from Century)

Brothers Raymond and Scott Lim brought their father’s beef jerky store to CBC TV’s Dragons’ Den on Tuesday

As reported by The Vancouver Sun, Papa Lim went all the way to Singapore 25 years ago to learn how to make the famous Singaporean treat. His original Bee Kim Heng Jerky store in Vancouver’s Chinatown flourished until a devastating fire meant he had to start over in a new location. Things have never been the same.

Raymond and Scott appeared on the show with their pitch and the Dragon’s Den investors are going to help them out!

Congratulations to BKH Jerky!! We’re proud of you and happy to be in your neighbourhood!!

Ledmac Celebrates Reflections’ Topping Off!

Ward McAllister is often heard saying that his favourite moment in a development project is when the crane goes up and his second favourite is when the crane comes down, and with good reason! The crane coming down is a sign that the building is almost complete. But before the crane is taken down, it is used to haul the last bucket of concrete to “Top Off” the building. And THAT is reason for us to celebrate with a Topping Off Ceremony!!

Wikipedia says that in building construction, topping out or topping off is a ceremony held when the last beam is placed at the top of a building. The history of “Topping Off” goes back a long way. It is considered to be similar to ship naming and launching ceremonies and was perhaps done to placate the gods and to shield the building from harm. The practice of “topping out” a new building can be traced to the ancient Scandinavian religious practice of placing a tree on the top of a new building to appease the tree-dwelling spirits of their ancestors that had been displaced. The practice migrated to England with Scandinavian invaders and took root there. Years later, It has evolved into more of a formal ceremony than a religious one.  And for us at Ledmac, it is a great excuse to thank everyone who contributed to the building with a good old- fashioned pig roast!

On July 15th, 2011, Ledingham McAllister, together with Marcon Construction, celebrated the topping off of Reflections in Burnaby with all of the hardworking men and women who contributed to achieving this important landmark in construction. We were honoured to be joined by Mayor Corrigan of the City of Burnaby and Council members Colleen Jordan and Paul McDonnell. Their support over the years has helped make Reflections, and all our communities in Burnaby such wonderful places to live.

We started the day by loading everyone into the freight elevator and riding to the top of the tower. If you’ve never been in a construction lift before, trust me, it’s just like a ride at Playland – not for the faint of heart! The sky was scattered with clouds but you could still take in the 360 degree views with awe. (Soon, our homeowners will be enjoying these views in their finished homes)! While we waited for the last bucket of cement to be poured on the top of the tower, our feast was being prepared on the ground. And little did we know at the time, but a handful of guys at Marcon had been working since 5am on it! And what a feast it was. The line-up for lunch was a mile long as Ward McAllister shook hands and thanked every person who had worked on the building.  Words of recognition were given by Ledingham McAllister President and CEO Ward McAllister and Marcon Construction President Marco Paolella in praise of the Site Superintendent, Mike Meneghello and his crew.

A great day was had by all! Thank you to Mike, Kevin and Brian from Marcon for roasting the pig and thank you to Ward and Marco for putting on such a great party!!

We’ll see you at the next one!
